ViJo was born as an idea to connect creativity and industrial production, creating a fashion brand that incorporates African motifs in the manufacturing and distribution of various products in 2018. The first initiative was centered around Tingatinga art, inspired by Edward Said Tingatinga (1932-1972). Edward, a self-taught painter only painted for four years (1968-1972). In the process he developed a unique painting style influenced by the countryside scenery of his birthplace and upbringing.
Edward’s five students continued his Tingatinga legacy by training more painters who then took on apprentices. This continuity has turned Tingatinga art into a global phenomenon, making a significant contribution to Africa’s creative industries and ViJo is proud to keep the legacy alive.
From Tingatinga, ViJo designers and manufacturers have expanded to produce and supply branded apparel, office accessories, hotel amenities, decorations, sports and fashion products for daily use using kanga, vitenge and other African motifs. ViJo Store Africa has been used for retail supply and distribution. ViJo has continued to offer branding services to public and private institutions. With its deep connection to arts and cultures, ViJo has evolved as a top choice for clients with limited budgets but a desire for quality and fashionable products.
