COVID-19

The Goethe Institute organized a digital festival during the COVID-19 pandemic known as Latitude from 4-6June 2020. The festival focused on decolonization and post-colonialism. The event was streamed live and made accessible through www.goethe.de/latitude-festival. The project resulted in a video documentary called “While We Wait – Tanzanian Artistic Production in the Times of Corona.”

Video Documentary

“While We Wait” presents the story of artists in Tanzania during the time of the coronavirus. It follows four artists: Tumaini Mwambasi (theatre, film & voice actor), Juma Rajab (actor & sound producer), Thobias Minzi (painter & film producer), and Vitali Maembe (community musician), with a prologue and epilogue from Vicensia Shule (theatre, film, and online content producer).

With over 20 years of active practice and international experience, these artists share their mixed feelings and individual impacts of the coronavirus on their lives. While they all agree on the negative impacts of COVID-19 on their careers, it is important to note that to a certain extent, the pandemic has exposed to the world the challenges facing some artists in Tanzania even before the pandemic.
