The ocean plays a crucial role in the lives of communities and livelihoods. The 10th symposium of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) organized an art competition for pupils in primary and secondary schools in Tanzania. The theme of the competition was: “Importance of the coastal and marine environment to Tanzania”. We were assigned to manage the competition from idea creation to final execution.
Students were encouraged to use their imagination, creativity, and knowledge to help others understand the significance of the coastal and marine environment through artwork. They were given options to draw, paint, use computer-assisted software, or compose a song to express their views. The final presentations were done through different media. The submitted creative works included drawings, cartoons, and song compositions.
Pupils from primary and secondary schools in the coastal regions of Tanzania, including Tanga, Pwani, Dar es Salaam, Lindi, and Mtwara, participated. There were two main categories for the competition: Category 1: Pupils with special needs, and Category 2: Other students. In each category, there were first, second, and third place prizes. Winners received certificates, a plaque, a set of books for their school, and a cash prize. Winners came from 12 schools, and the award ceremony was held in Mtwara in 2018.
